Red Bull Ingridients

Acording official Red Bull page this drink contains caffeine, B vitamins, sucrose and glucose, taurine and spring water from the Alps.[1]

Also according to this site Red Bull can of 250 ml contains 80 milligrams of caffeine, which is like a cup of coffee, and about 100 ml of red bull contain 11 grams of sucrose and glucose from sugar beet and about 1 gram of taurine.

Caffeine

Caffeine is stimulant. This means that in increase our concentration and may delay the feeling of fatigue.Although it have psihoativne effects on the body, caffeine is completely legal and unregulated in nearly all over the world. In the USA caffeine is consumed through coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate and energy drinks on daily basis.[2]

The tolarate dose of caffeine for adults is about 200 to 300 milligrams of caffeine (two to four cups of coffee). This dose of caffeine doesn’t have any side effects.[3,4]

It is not recommened that pregnant womens consume more than 200 milligrams of caffeine a day.[5]

This means that if you over consume caffeine consuming red bull or other caffeinated beverages and you consume more then 500 ml of caffeine during the day,you might have symptoms of insomnia, nervousness, irritability, restlessness, muscle cramps, pain in the stomach.[6,7]

The large quantities of caffeine may cause symptoms of mania, depression, disorientation, delusions, psychosis, psychosis, and other disorders.[8,9]

But caffeine also has a good side.Researches show that can stop colon cancer.[10]But if you overdo it with the consumption of caffeine you can also increase chances of cancer of bladder cancer, although it is not specified what dose can couse this.[11]

Studies show that moderate consumption of caffeine,3 to 5 cups of coffee reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, and higher consumption does not increase the risk of heart disease.[12]

This study also argues that moderate consumption of caffeine may also reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and liver cancer.[13]

Study that lasted less than 85 days have shown that consuming 1-3 cups of coffee can raise blood pressure or hypertension. But not consuming and drinking more than four cups of coffee is not associated with an increased blood pressure.[14] Consuming caffeine you can also protect against liver cirrhosis.[15]

While there are researches that show that consuming high amounts of caffeine don’t have side effects on development of the baby many doctors recommend reducing caffeine intake during pregnancy.[16]

The recommended dose for pregnant women is 200 mg and based on this research.[17] However, when caffeine is consumed for some time and you stop consuming it,research shows that it may have a diuretic effect. But those who consume caffeine daily have developed a tolerance to the diuretic effect. [18]

Caffeine has adverse effects on anxiety of disorders.[19]Excessive caffeine consumption of more than 300 milligrams may increase anxiety and can even be a cause mania or psychosis.[20]

On the other hand, caffeine may also improve symptoms of depression and reduce the risk of suicide in people with psychological disorders.[21]

All students who think that they can improve memory with consuming caffeine I have to disappoint them because research shows that caffeine does not improve memory but on the other hand can improve cognitive function, especially when you are tired.[22]So it is actually useful for students.

Let’s say the problem with caffeine is that every day consumtion can lead to dependence.

If after a while you stop the consumption of caffeine this can lead to withdrawal symptoms of consuming caffeine.Symptoms that you may experience headaches, drowsiness, irritability, insomnia, inability to concentrate and pain in the stomach
and they may appear even after 12 hours of termination of the consumption of caffeine, but ordinarily occur after 2 days.[23]

Studies show that about 52% of people have these symptoms, which were previously consumed 235 milligrams of caffeine.[24]

Symptoms of termination of the consumption of caffeine are also categorized like mental disorder.[25]

However, caffeine is known as a stimulant, and has been frequently used to enhance alertness and concentration and prevent fatigue. The dose of caffeine for this effect varies from person to person and other factors such as the degree of tolerance and weight of the person.Effects of caffeine start after an hour of consuming caffeine.[26]

Conclusion

Although caffeine has advantages and disadvantages, the consumption of Red Bull can improve focus, concentration and reduce fatigue if you are not consumin caffein on daily basis. If you have already developed a tolerance to the caffeine,Red Bull (this refers to a 1 can) will not help you to feel the benefits of caffeine,so you will need to use other caffeine food sources for that. You could read in this text that caffeine is also diuretic so if you are consuming it with alcohol(which also have diuretic effects) be sure to consume sufficient
amount of water to avoid dehydration. To experience the negative symptoms of caffeine you should drink about 12 Red Bulls a day (if you don’t count other sources of caffeine) which is almost impossible.

B Vitamins

Vitamin B is a group of water soluble vitamins that play an important role in the metabolism of cells.

In group B vitamins include the following vitamins

Vitamin B1 (thiamin)
Vitamin B2 (riboflavin)
Vitamin B3 (niacin or niacinamide)
Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid)
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine, pyridoxal, or pyridoxamine, or pyridoxine hydrochloride)
Vitamin B7 (biotin)
Vitamin B9 (folic acid)
Vitamin B12 (various cobalamins; commonly cyanocobalamin in vitamin supplements)

For healthy people, the recommended dose of vitamin B12 is 2.4 micrograms of vitamin B-6 is 1.3 mg of folic acid is 400 micrograms, pantothenic acid 5 mg and 30 mcg of biotin.
Recommended dosage for men is 16 mg of niacin 1.2 mg thiamine and riboflavin 1.3 mg, while women should consume
14 mg of niacin, thiamine 1.1 mg and 1.1 mg of riboflavin.[27]The main reason for adding vitamin B to Red Bull is because vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) affect the mental performance[28],while a deficency of vitamin B3 (niacin) is associated with fatigue [29] like a deficency of vitamin B5 [Gropper, S. S, Smith, J. L. Groff, J. L. (2009). Advanced nutrition and human metabolism. Belmont, CA: Wadsworth, Cengage Learning.] as well as vitamin B12 deficiency.[30] Also in avoiding fatigue important role plays vitamin B6.[31,32]
According to data from the Red Bull site one can of Red Bull of 250 milliliters contains

100% of the daily requirement of vitamin B3 Niacin
250% of the daily requirement of vitamin B6 Pyridoxine
80% of the daily requirement of Vitamin Vitamin B12
50% of the daily requirement of vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid)

18 mg niacin
6mg panothenic acid
2 mg of vitamin B6
1.65 mg of riboflavin
1 mcg of vitamin B12

To exceed the daily intake of B12 with Red Bull you should drink about 3 cans (if we take the data iom.edu), but even if you do drink three cans of Red bull there will be not any side effects because there are not any knonw side effects of excessive intake of vitamin B12
nd it is believed that this vitamin is not toxic and that his excessive consumption have np
adverse effects in healthy people.[33]

To exceeded a daily intake of riboflavin or vitamin B2, you need to drink just one can of Red Bull. But even if you exceed the daily intake till day there are no known side effects of excessive intake of vitamin B2.Even 400 mg of riboflavin has no adverse side effects on the body.[34]

The recommended dose of vitamin B6 for adult men and women (19-50 years) is 1.3 mg daily. Side effects of excessive consumption of vitamin B6 exist but it occur only at doses larger than 100 mg per day.[35]To consume more then 100 mg a day you should drink more than 50 cans of Red Bull, which again is almost impossible.
Recommended daily dose for adult men and women of vitamin B5 (panothenic acid) is 5 mg.
[36]This means that with one can of red bull you can consume the recommended daily intake of vitamin B5.Even consuming large doses of this vitamin or 10 grams a day have no serious side effects except indigestion and diarrhea. [Gropper, S. S, Smith, J. L. Groff, J. L. (2009). Advanced nutrition and human metabolism. Belmont, CA: Wadsworth, Cengage Learning.]

With one can of Red Bull you will also consume the recommended daily amount of vitamin B3 or niacin. Large doses of niacin or 2 grams daily have been associated with liver damage.
[Keith Parker; Laurence Brunton; Goodman, Louis Sanford; Lazo, John S .; Gilman, Alfred (2006). Goodman & Gilman’s The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics. New York: McGraw-Hill. ISBN 0-07-142280-3.]

The doses of niacin from 1.5 to 6 grams per day can also lead to side effects such as redness and itching, rashes and dry skin. To enter toxic amounts of niacin you should consume large amounts of Red Bull, which is again is impractical.

Conclusion

Although Red Bull contains more than the recommended dose of vitamin B, their consumption has no side effects. Also we should mention that the B Vitamins are water soluble and that excess consumtion of B vitamins can be expelled through urine.
On the other hand, if you want to preclude a lack of intake of vitamin B with consumption of Red bull there is no need for you this because you can get recommended dose of B vitamins thru regular balanced diet.

Sucrose

Studies show that sucrose can reduce the amount of good bacteria in the intestines by 50%, increases the pH level in the intestines and increases body weight in animals.[37]

Although sucrose generally considered as a safe food and it is approved by the FDA,frapantan fact is that FDA approved sucorose use based on 110 studies conducted on animals and humans, but the interesting fact is that none of these studies did last more then 4 days.[38]

Problem with sucrose is that it is artificial sweetener, and many studies have shown that artificial sweeteners have many side effects. One of the side effects of consuming sucrose might be that it can couse leukemia.Although that is result of study made on rats.[39]

According to data from the site truthaboutsplenda.com where they stated that there are no long-term studies that show that the use of safe sucrose is safe for humans.[40]

I recommened you to see this movie if you want to learn more about the harmful effects of sucrose.[41]

Although sucralose is advertised as a sweetener without calories, studies show that sucralose has a negative impact on glucose (sugar) in the blood and it can increase the risk of diabetes.
[42]

Sucralose can also increase your appetite and desire for carbohydrates.[43]

Although sucralose is considered low calorie and “diet food” research has shown that those who consume carbon drinks with sugar had less weight then those who consume carbon drink with artificial sweeteners [44].

Conclusion

My opinion is that sucrose in Red Bull is not the best sweetener, and it is not healthy at all.

Glucose

Glucose or dextrose is the most abundant form of carbohydrates in nature.

The problem is that glucose has a high glycemic index. This means it rapidly increase production of insulin and blood sugar levels and in the long term it can lead to health problems such as obesity and diabetes. Although glucose is the primary energy source for the body, after we consume it we will happier but that felling doesn’t last so long, because blood sugar levels decrease causing it to feel tired again.

Conclusion

Glucose in the Red Bull can have negative effects on our body if consumed in large quantities on a daily basis.

Taurine

Taurine is essential for a healthy cardiovascular system, development and function of skeletal muskalature, retina and nervous system.[45]

Researches show that taurine may also reduce DNA damage and increase exercise capacity because protects cells from damage.[46] Taurine may also reduce the level of cholesterol in obese adult males.[47,48] The same results were obtained in animal studies.[49]Taurine also retains potassium and magnesium in the cells and reduce amount of sodium.Because of that it is consider diuretic.[Kirk J and Kirk K. Inhibition of volume-activated taurine and I-efflux from HeLa cells by P-glycoprotein blockers correlates with calmodulin inhibition. J. Biol. Chem., Nov. 1994, 269: 29389-29394.]

Taurine plays a very important role in function of skeletal muscle.[50]

Research shows that it can reduce weight the blood glucose level in rats with diabetes.[51]

Studies done on humans have shown that a dose of 1.5 grams of taurine has no effect on insulin sensitivity.[C. Brons, C. Spohr H. Storgaard, J. Dyerberg A. Vaag. “Effect of taurine treatment on insulin secretion and action, and on serum lipid levels in overweight men with a genetic predisposition for type II diabetes mellitus. European Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2004) 58, 1239-1247.]

Studies also show that energy drinks with taurine does not improve the athletic performance or anaerobic power in 20 NCAA Division players who participated in the study.[52]

Research on animals show that mothers who consumed taurine supplementation may increase the risk of diabetes and obesity in their bebies. This study was done on rats [53]According to data from the Mayo Clinic consuming 3,000 milligrams of taurine is considered safe.[54]
One can of Red Bull contains 1,000 milligrams of taurine.

Certain Scandinavian countries have banned some energy drinks containing taurine, but no studies that show that Taurine is really harmful.

Conclusion

Although not many studies regarding taurine show that it doesnt have harmful effects you should also consider the fact that that there is no many studies made on effects of consumtion of taurine.

Other research

Research conducted at Creighton University examined the effects of Red Bull (sugar) in one repetition of bench press. In this study participated 17 men and the results were that Red Bull has no effect on the progress or improvement of one repetition on the bench press.[55]

This study also shows that the consumption of energy drinks has no positive effects on cognitive function in young people. These scientists who did this research does not recommend consuming any energy drinks.[56]

The final conclusion

In my opinion you should not consume energy drinks such as Red Bull, because you are just consuming more toxins for your body.As I mentioned, this drinks contain artificial sweeteners and sugars that are harmful to you, and can also cause dehydration
thus preventing the detoxification of the body.

If you want to have more energy just starts to eat healthier, sleep at least 7 hours and occasional exercise. I do not even drink the coffee, and I’m not a fan of any stimulants.

    Thanks for the good article.

I disagree on any advantage any energy drink has. This is just my personal opinion being a former nurse. They have way too much caffeine in them. I realize that is the sole purpose of why people consume them…for the caffeine and to help them stay awake; however, recent research has shown that an increase in consumption of these drinks have drastically increased, especially in our young people. This is worrisome because they could easily overdose causing cardiac issues. They (young people) do not understand the consequences these drinks give and they really should be banned from the shelves. The stores make them too easy to obtain at ANY age and they are heart attacks waiting to happen. Its very unfortunate and I feel very strong on this issue, coming from a professional prospective. On another note and this is just some personal “food for thought.” Spell check would be advisable prior to clicking your “send” button and having a public site. I understand you are working on your English, but perhaps taking a basic class prior to posting these articles may be advisable. Its just an idea and not meant to be derogatory in any way, shape or form. You have wanted to place many of your articles in one of my FB groups, but I have declined quite a few articles mainly based on how they have been written and content. I cannot speak for others, but I proof read ALL articles prior to “approving” them. If my name is listed as Administrator, I want my name to remain in good standing and have my groups to be known to have good content and correct content in them( to the best of my knowledge). Best of luck to you!

Great article!! May I suggest proof reading to correct grammatical errors? It would solidify this well written artical.

    • Nurse75

This is article is actually very inaccurate. The amount of B6 in one can of red bull is approximately 6x the recommended daily allowance. This causes B6 toxicity and a nasty cycle of neurological symptoms in some people.
